backstory

aimless college student
born in esperanza, spent childhood in despit. currently living in esperanza, with her uncle ruben
after an accident that resulted in the destruction of the lab mayari spent her early years in, her family fled to despit. they expected to stay there a week at most to recuperate, and then head back home to esperanza
forcibly taken in as ringmaster mirabelle's daughter, and newest star attraction in rêve
citizens of despit only saw her as entertainment
even though mirabelle had other prisoners at the circus, mayari was isolated from all of them. the only performers she was allowed to interact with were the ones in the same group as her: sergio, lucille, and mirabelle's nibling kaleb
sergio, lucille, and kaleb bullied and took advantage of mayari. they'd call her a freak for using telekinesis, saying a magic user like her didn't deserve to be the star performer. abuse from the group and punishments from mirabelle fed into thoughts of inadequacy
kaleb enjoyed hypnotizing their peers, with mayari and sergio being toyed with the most. made them do the following: had sergio hug and confess his love to mayari, after he hit her or flung insults at her; making them cuddle and kiss, acting all lovey dovey. mayari developed feelings for sergio thanks to kaleb's manipulation. they led her to believe that getting bullied/punished was a normal part of romance
escaped despit when she was 17 with the help of ██████. mirabelle sent guards to chase after her. mayari ended up in esperanza, and ran into niko and crystal, who helped her lose her pursuers
reunited with her auntie ruben and lived with her until she went to college. learned about the rest of the family from her
after her rescue, she began having nightmares, most related to her childhood. usually consisted of the following:
they relive the night they escaped despit, but is instead caught and returned to a very angry mirabelle, who is brandishing a whip. they're forced to take mirabelle's insults and mocking laughter from their group, unable to move from their spot. before she strikes, mayari wakes up
them performing in the circus and messing up, with mirabelle being forced to bring in the next act/end the show early. she lashes out about how they've ruined everything, and takes the whip out. she mutters under her breath about how lucky they are to be taken in by her. like the first nightmare, they wake up before getting hit
they run away from sergio. once they find a safe place, they catch their breath, only to be hugged by him from behind. she's unable to move, and ends up dying in his grasp somehow. he whispers how upset they made him for running away and that they can never leave him
struggling with suicidal thoughts that followed after her escape. has attempted a few times, believing her friends and uncle would be better off without a fucked up mess like her
was formerly part of a polycule with niko and crystal, but it ultimately did not work

doesn't trust easily. consider yourself lucky if xe likes you. super loyal to close friends, and is willing to protect them as long as they don’t break xyr trust
extremely, albeit unintentionally, vulgar. says "shit, sorry" if crystal tells xem not to swear in front of kids
